Developing Strategic Leadership Skills
By Joe Giordano
Strategic leadership is the development of a vision for your organization. The vision should be a means used to focus resources towards the attainment of future goals. It must be a process the organization uses to guide the future development of its workforce
Strategic leaders establish structure, allocate resources, and create a vision for their organization by shaping the culture of the organization so that cohesion and effective team building can be accomplished at each level of the organization. A vast majority of their efforts should be spent developing and mentoring future leaders by utilizing the processes of coaching, counseling, evaluating, and assessing.
Development of management is a long-term investment that will result in their empowerment. In order to be successful effective leaders must create a climate where good performance is expected, superior performance is recognized, and poor performance is unacceptable.
Counseling should be utilized as a positive tool to prepare employees for future responsibilities.
Assessing is quite simple, it is a process used to compare performance to standards, provide feedback, and develop a plan of action to improve the effectiveness of your current and future managers. It will assist them to sustain their strengths and correct their weaknesses. The ability to identify and eliminate organizational weaknesses is essential to training management, developing subordinate leadership, and process improvement.
Effective leaders will establish and enforce performance standards and provide purpose, direction, and motivation for their staff. They will assess the current state of their organization and develop a strategy to provide what the organization is lacking to achieve the long-range goals of the newly created vision. They create an organizational climate that is conducive to the empowerment of their workforce. Effective leadership is not about controlling from the top; it is more about unleashing the abilities of empowered employees. They must provide those who report to them with the resources required to develop and implement new policies and procedures. Doing so will provide them with a sense of responsibility and the motivation to accomplish growth and transformation within the organization.
Successful strategic leaders will ensure their organization as a whole is sharing and embracing the learning process associated with the changes required to bridge the gap between the present state and the future intended state (vision). Their vision provides the ultimate sense of purpose, direction, and motivation for the entire workforce. The key is to ensure your workforce sees the vision as worthwhile and contribute the energy and commitment needed to accomplish your organizations goals.
